Personality:
As the Character Info section made clear, Zack is a serial killer. He outright tells Ray at the beginning of their journey that he has a habit of killing people who seem like they’re truly happy, filled with glee and joy that sends Zack into a murderous frenzy. (Though if you piss him off enough he won’t hesitate to kill you too.) He will chase the unfortunate victim down, delighting in how their cheer turns to fear as he plunges his weapon into their chest, shredding them to bits! He’s able to survive things like electric chairs and getting stabbed in the gut with his own scythe, and he’s strong enough to bust through glass walls, so he’s more focused on his kill than his own safety. Kind of like a monster already, right?
Well… He does have standards. For one, he refuses to kill people who don’t seem to feel anything at all. Not even a fake smile will work. If you genuinely ain’t feeling happy, he ain’t interested. He doesn’t try to rationalize his murders as anything other than senseless murders, and he finds torturing the victim just plain creepy. Also, if you’re coming at him with a death wish, you better be doing him a huge favor, like Ray promising to help Zack escape in Episode 1, or he will refuse out of disgust.
Then there’s the issue of Zack’s intelligence. Due to being raised in extremely neglectful/abusive conditions, he wasn’t really taught to read. He also never learned patience, and tends to get frustrated by inconveniences and things he doesn’t understand. Case in point, his reaction to his own poorly made gravestone in episode 1. He ends up smashing the thing to bits with a pickaxe, and then decides to go on a rampage and destroy every tombstone he can find. His usual solution to barriers is to try and violently force his way through or find a shortcut, so he can be rather trigger happy. Somebody should be with him to help unlock complicated doors and solve puzzles.
But at least he’s honest with himself. He knows he’s nothing better than a lowlife serial killer, and for how much he hates being called stupid he realizes he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. He once killed a woman with more extreme prejudice than usual because she lied to his face, and he will call people out on trying to justify their evil deeds.
You do not want to have Zack for an enemy, but earn his trust by being honest and not going back on your word, and he’ll warm up to you. Heck, he’ll even start protecting you if you gain his trust. And you can trust him to be a loyal ally. He’d never willingly betray those he wants to protect. If he realizes he was tricked into doing so, he’ll go after the person who tricked him in a murderous rage.
As one last note, Zack is a modest sort of person who wouldn’t care about fancy things. And by modest, we mean he’s perfectly happy living off the streets and drinking cola with his cereal. Gray had designed each floor of his murder building to suit each killer, and Zack wanted a dingy back alley that was no improvement over his living conditions before. Ray went in his room to fetch the knife he used before Gray found him, and that room was a mess. Bloodied bandages, empty cans, magazines that had been scribbled on… He was even sleeping on a ruined couch instead of a bed. Zack was 100% ok with this living arrangement. Gray says himself that he appreciates how Zack is so pure and naive, yet so deadly.
